I wanted to let parents know that our neighborhood was limited to so many chaperones for the upcoming field trip. Unfortunately we could not take everyone who wanted to volunteer to chaperone. If a parent can not make it, we may notify you to chaperone. Thank you for understanding.

We are close to finishing chapter 9 on fractions and decimals. Today's lesson on 9.5 was on problem solving with money. They are to complete pg. 523-524. A tutorial is below, if needed. This week's curriculum objectives, important dates, and reminders can be found below.





Math:
Students learned 9.5 on problem solving with money, will complete 9.6 on adding fraction parts of 10 and 100, 9.7 on Thursday on comparing decimals, and will do review .

Science/ Social Studies:
They are continuing the science unit on building an electromagnet, testing its strength, and reinventing the telegraph.


Language Arts:
Students are learning new skills in unit 6. They will be working on:

New: The third quarter is almost over which means report cards will be going home in a few weeks. Please make sure your child has all past due assignments handed in. If your child has completed their reading log for the month, they will earn free pizza via the Book It! program.



Grading:
This year your child will have letter grades on their report cards.  It is important for you to review the papers that come home with your child on a regular basis. If your child has a C or below on an assignment, please help reinforce the concepts and have your child redo the assignment.  Sometimes you may also see a 1-4 score on your child’s paper. This type of score reflects a rubric score for the assignment. See the grade equivalents below:

4-A, 3-B, 2-C, 1-D or Below

Interims will keep you informed of your child’s current grades. The first interim, however, will be very general since only a few grades will be given by that date.

Homework:
Please check your child’s homework notebook for daily homework assignments.  The basic nightly routine will be 20 minutes of reading AND a math assignment.  The math will be the homework pages in the math workbook that correlate with the daily lesson OR a Think Central assignment.  Your child should have the pages written down in their notebooks. Mr. Utter will also post daily assignments with how to videos on the G-Force blog.

Snack:
Fourth grade students have a very early lunch this year, so we will not have a snack time.  Our time is limited in the afternoon due to recess and specials. Please make sure your child eats a sufficient amount of lunch to get them through the school day.

We are finishing up chapter 8 on multiplication of fractions and will be starting chapter 9 on fractions and decimals. Today's lesson on 8.5 was on problem solving with comparison problems using fractions. They are to complete pg. 485-486. A tutorial is below, if needed. Math:
Students learned 8.5 on problem solving with comparison problems using fractions, will complete 9.1 tomorrow on relating tenths and decimals, 9.2 on Wednesday on relating hundredths and decimals, 9.3 on Thursday on equivalent fractions and decimals, and 9.4 on Friday on relating fractions, decimals, and money.

Science/ Social Studies:
They are continuing the science unit on magnetism where they are studying magnetic forces and electromagnets.


Language Arts:
Students are learning new skills in unit 6. They will be working on: read to identify and annotate examples of fairy tale genre features; use understanding of fairy tale genre features to respond to a close reading prompt; use knowledge of letter-sound correspondences to read accurately; decode, sort, and spell words with "oo" sounds spelled oo, ould, ull, and ew. understand the features of a strong narrative journal entry; analyze characters' actions; infer information about characters; read to gather evidence to describe a character; use my understanding of characters to respond to a close reading prompt; identify events in a source text; create a plan for organizing three narrative journal entries; read to gather evidence to compare texts with similar themes; use my understanding of themes to respond to a close reading prompt; and order adjectives correctly within sentences.

We started a new unit on multiplication of fractions in chapter 8 and later will be working through chapter 9 on fractions and decimals. Today's lesson on 8.1 was on multiples of unit fractions. Math:
Students started lesson 8.1 on multiples of unit fractions, will complete 8.2 on Multiples of Fractions tomorrow, 8.3 on multiplying a fraction by a whole number using models on Wednesday, 8.4 on multiplying a fraction or mixed number by a whole number on Thursday, and 8.5 on problem solving: comparison problems with fractions on Friday.

Science/ Social Studies:

The math homework is a review sheet on line plots. We covered this lesson last Thursday so they should be somewhat familiar with it. This week's curriculum objectives, important dates, and reminders can be found below.


Math:
Students reviewed line plots today and will complete review tomorrow. They will receive a study guide. The unit 5 test will be on Thursday covering lessons 7.3 - 7.5, 7.7, 7.10, and 12.5. We will begin unit 6 on Friday on multiplying fractions and comparing decimal fractions lesson 8.1.

Science/ Social Studies:
They are finishing up the theme on storytelling of an important event that happened in their region. They have written about two important events and now will choose one of them speaking from the first person point of view as if they were at the event, and will explain what they saw and what happened.

They will begin a new science unit on magnetism near the end of the week.


Language Arts:
Students are learning new skills in unit 5. They will be working on: understanding the form and use of progressive verb tenses; editing my essay for correct form and use of progressive verb tenses; integrating information from two texts to speak knowledgeably on a topic; assessing my writing using a rubric; choosing an appropriate font style and size to publish my writing; sharing my prior knowledge about the Essential Question; reading on-level text with purpose and understanding; reading to identify key story events; writing a summary; reading and analyzing a writing prompt; reading and analyzing the features of a narrative journal entry; rereading to find text evidence about characters; making inferences about characters based on text evidence; analyzing characters and events in a story to determine the theme of a story; identifying events and details from a source text used in a fictional journal entry; explaining the meaning of the suffixes -ly, -ily, -ways, and -wise; sorting words by suffixes; and spelling words with -ly, -ily, -ways, and -wise.
