The students have homework tonight if they did not finish the review study guide during class in preparation for the unit 7 math test tomorrow covering chapters 10 and 11 from their Go Math book. Parents,

The math homework is on lesson 11.4 on joining and separating angles. The homework is pg.625 - 626. There is a tutorial below to assist you in today's lesson, if needed. You will find this week's content we will be covering, important dates, and reminders below.

Math:

Students are finishing up chapter 11 on angles where they did lesson 11.4 today, 11.5 on Tuesday, problem solving on Wednesday, review on Thursday, and the unit 7 test on Friday where it will cover chapters 10 and 11.

Science/ Social Studies:

We have moved back to social studies where students will continue to work on the Smithsonian PBL. They will be working on the next "theme" on biogeology. This will entail learning about the economy of a region by researching important events that took place in the region and its natural resources, geography, and industries.

Language Arts:

Students are beginning a new unit (8) on Earth changes. This week they will be working on: sharing prior knowledge about the Essential Question; read to identify and annotate key details; use key details to answer the Essential Question; brainstorm ideas for my own science-based informative report; read to find context clues that help define scientific words about earthquakes; check my definitions using a dictionary or scientific reference and expand them to be more precise; identify examples of cause/effect text structures; identify signal words and phrases for cause/effect relationships; find and use credible print sources for my informative report; explain how information in charts, graphs, and diagrams supports or extends information in a text; explain the meanings, define, and spell words with the prefixes de-, un-, in-, im-, and dis-; identify text features and make before-reading predictions; use key events to summarize the account; plan my informative report; use a graphic organizer to organize my notes; understand the features of a firsthand account; find examples of the features in a text; compare and contrast firsthand and secondhand accounts of an event; and recognize modal auxiliaries

Grading:

This year your child will have letter grades on their report cards.  It is important for you to review the papers that come home with your child on a regular basis. If your child has a C or below on an assignment, please help reinforce the concepts and have your child redo the assignment.  Sometimes you may also see a 1-4 score on your child’s paper. This type of score reflects a rubric score for the assignment. See the grade equivalents below:

4-A, 3-B, 2-C, 1-D or Below

Interims will keep you informed of your child’s current grades. The first interim, however, will be very general since only a few grades will be given by that date.

Homework:

Please check your child’s homework notebook for daily homework assignments.  The basic nightly routine will be 20 minutes of reading AND a math assignment.  The math will be the homework pages in the math workbook that correlate with the daily lesson OR a Think Central assignment.  Your child should have the pages written down in their notebooks. Mr. Utter will also post daily assignments with how to videos on the G-Force blog.

Snack:

Fourth grade students have a very early lunch this year, so we will not have a snack time.  Our time is limited in the afternoon due to recess and specials. Please make sure your child eats a sufficient amount of lunch to get them through the school day.

We had our third Math DoDEA Summative Assessment today. They will have their last one tomorrow. Since they are testing, there is no math homework tonight. You will find the content to be covered for the week, important dates, and reminders below.

Math:

Students are finishing up the Math DoDEA Summative Assessment tomorrow, have no school on Wednesday, and then will go back to Unit 7 lesson 11.1 on Thursday, and lesson 11.2 on Friday.

Science/ Social Studies:

We are testing on soil and rocks that we learned lately. We will be finishing up science with a topography investigation. We will be looking to go back to social studies next week.

Language Arts:

Students are finishing up unit 7. They will be working on: revise my news report to maintain a formal voice; explain what happened and why on specific information in the text; determine the meanings of homophones; use context to confirm or self-correct word recognition and understanding, rereading as necessary; recognize and avoid run-on sentences; use a comma before a coordinating conjunction; explain how an author uses reasons and evidence to support particular points in a text; determine the meanings of homophones; use context to define homophones; and spell homophones; edit my writing to use relative pronouns correctly; integrate information from two texts on the same topic; and use criteria to evaluate my news report;

Parents,

We completed review in preparation for the DoDEA Math Summative Assessment starting this Thursday. We are reviewing protractor practice, multiplication and division, and fractions. The homework is on pg. 61-62 in their PARCC book (Utter's Homeroom). You will find the content to be covered for the week, important dates, and reminders below.

Math:

Students are completing PARCC review today, tomorrow and Wednesday. They will be testing on Thursday, Friday, next Monday, and Tuesday.

Science/ Social Studies:

They are continuing science with soil. They will be learning about what soil is, what is found in it, what causes big rocks to break down into smaller rocks, and understand how rocks are affected by acid rain.

Language Arts:

Students are learning new skills in unit 7. They will be working on: read to integrate information from two texts, use my understanding of two texts to make a comparison; group related information to plan for my news report; use the relative pronouns: who, whose, whom, which, and that; share information I have learned about how and why communities evolve; share information about identifying chronological text structure and using graphic features; read to identify and annotate key details; use key details to determine the main idea; identify and demonstrate understanding of words by relating them to their synonyms; revise sentences to vary sentence length and structure; revise my news report to maintain a formal voice; explain what happened and why based on specific information in the text; determine the meanings of homophones; and use context to confirm or self-correct word recognition and understanding, rereading as necessary.
