Parents,

The students began chapter three with multiplying by tens. The homework is for students to complete pg. 149 - 150. They needed to find a strategy to multiply the numbers. A strategy that we used was to multiply the numbers and then add the zeros. We also split the number up, multiplied them, and then added them. For example, 52 X 40 can be written as: 40 X 50 + 40 X 2 = 2,000 + 80 = 2,080. Another strategy had students multiplying 52 X 4 and then adding a zero to the product which would be 208 + 0 = 2,080. Another strategy we used had students split the number in half and then multiply it twice. For example, lets say we are multiplying 12 X 30. We can split 12 in half to multiply 6 X 30 = 180. Then we double this since we originally split it in half to get 360. You can also watch the video on lesson 3.1 below, as well.
