Today's math lesson was having students understand how to divide a fraction by a whole number and a whole number by a fraction by using the inverse of multiplication. For example, 3 divided by 1/4 would be the same as 3 X 4 = 12. When dividing 1/4 by 3, you will multiply 1/4 by 1/3 to get 1/12. Watch the video, if needed.

They are not stuck following the process from the book. Most students like changing the mixed numbers to improper fractions, multiplying, and then changing it back to a mixed number. Students need to understand that when a mixed number is multiplied by a fraction, the product will be less than the value of the mixed number. When a mixed number is multiplied by 1, the product will be the same as the mixed number, and when a mixed number is multiplied by a mixed number, the result will be a bigger mixed number than the factors.
