Dec. 5, 2017

Parents,

There is no homework from the math book due to us finishing up the chapter 3 test from Friday and completing the pretest for chapter 4. Below you will find the G Force Gazette news for the week.

Neighborhood News
  • We are doing a gift exchange and a STEM project. Please see the attached sheet.
  • Our SMART goal this year is to increase multiplication fluency so that every student has mastered their multiplication facts. This week we will be targeting fours. We will be monitoring their daily progress.
  • There have been changes to math so you can expect homework on Wednesdays, as well.
  • Please encourage students to take reading counts tests as they complete their books throughout the year. Reading counts points are being calculated for neighborhood recognition.
  • The Scholastic Reading Inventory (SRI) is a test that students will take each quarter to measure your child’s reading level. SRI growth is usually related to continual reading.  The more a student reads, the better reader they will become.
  • If you need to contact any of us, the quickest way is probably through email. Our emails are as follows: charles.utter@am.dodea.edu; kali.hamill@am.dodea.edu and judith.ward@am.dodea.edu.
  • If your child will be absent from school, please let the office know with a call, email, or note. You can email the school at CESattendance@am.dodea.edu
  • New DODEA rules prohibit food for birthdays so please do not send in cupcakes or other food for your child.

Educational Targets:
Math:
Students are beginning chapter 4 on division. We should get through lessons 4.1 through 4.3 this week. They will be estimating quotients using multiples, completing basic division with remainders, and interpreting the remainder.

Science/ Social Studies:
Students will go back to working on the Alien PBL Project researching their region to answer questions like: How will you find/or make food? How will you travel around your region? How will you divide up the resources you have?

Language Arts:
Their reading comprehension skill this week is still  working on drawing conclusions. The grammar skill is irregular plural nouns and they are writing personal narratives about something that happened last week at school.

During the week of December 11th, there are a few special activities that fourth grade would like to do.

  1. Gift Exchange: This is an activity that is meant to be silly and fun, so gifts don’t need to be special or valuable. Your child can just wrap a toy or item that they already own and that they don’t use or play with anymore.  Please don’t feel like you need to go out and buy a gift!  (If you really can’t think of anything and plan on buying something, please don’t spend more than $5.) We will do the gift exchange on Friday, December 15th, which is the last day before the break. Please bring the wrapped gift anytime that week.

  1. Gingerbread House STEM Project:  We will also be doing a STEM project that involves building a gingerbread house. We begin the planning for our structure on Thursday December 14th, and we will be building it Friday December 15th from 8:45 to 11:00.

For this project, we need:

**Volunteers!  Our student groups always benefit from having an adult assistant while we build. You are welcome to help them on that Friday morning.

**Supplies! In order to construct the houses, we need a lot of materials. We are asking you to bring in one (or some!) of the following items.

Graham crackers
Marshmallows
Pretzel sticks
Lifesavers
Twizzlers
Candy canes (small)
Gumdrops
Jelly beans
M & M’s
Skittles
Smarties
Gallon sized freezer bags
Plastic bowls

**Frosting makers--We are also asking for a few brave parents to put together some icing. The stiff icing recipe is listed below. We will need about 18 bags.  Please let us know if you’re willing to help out with this.

Royal Icing Recipe #1
  • 1 pound of confectioners sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar
  • 3 egg whites
Beat slowly until stiff peaks form. Put icing in a gallon sized plastic bag.

Thank you so much for your support and for making these activities successful and fun for the students. If you have questions, please let us know.
