Parents,

This week's curriculum objectives, important dates, and reminders can be found below.

Math:
Students will be completing lesson 6.6 on comparing fractions using benchmarks tomorrow, 6.7 on Wednesday comparing fractions, 6.8 on Thursday comparing and ordering fractions, and we will start chapter 7 lesson 7.1 on adding and subtracting parts of a whole on Friday.

Science/ Social Studies:
Students are continuing a new project on regions. They will be researching information and coming up with artifacts that visitors will read and see when the "museum" is open. They will also be building artifacts that correlate with the standard. The "theme" they are starting with is Native American art and architecture from the five regions of the U.S.

Language Arts:
Students are finishing new skills in the last part of unit 4 and will be learning new skills starting unit 5. They will be working on: reading to identify and annotate examples of text evidence that reveals character; using knowledge of the consonant-le syllable pattern to read; working with others to identify and list words with the consonant-le syllable pattern; editing a text to check or correct frequently confused words; consulting reference materials to check and correct spelling; reading to identify text evidence; making a judgment based on text evidence; reflecting and evaluating my own writing; sharing my prior knowledge about the Essential Question; reading to identify key details and main idea; summarizing the text; brainstorming an essay topic in the area of science and technology; determining the meaning of domain-specific vocabulary; describing the overall structure of events in a text; and recognizing credible online sources.

Report Cards Go Home

New: Remind your child to use clues from the text to improve their reading comprehension.

Grading:
This year your child will have letter grades on their report cards.  It is important for you to review the papers that come home with your child on a regular basis. If your child has a C or below on an assignment, please help reinforce the concepts and have your child redo the assignment.  Sometimes you may also see a 1-4 score on your child’s paper. This type of score reflects a rubric score for the assignment. See the grade equivalents below:

4-A, 3-B, 2-C, 1-D or Below

Interims will keep you informed of your child’s current grades. The first interim, however, will be very general since only a few grades will be given by that date.

Homework:
Please check your child’s homework notebook for daily homework assignments.  The basic nightly routine will be 20 minutes of reading AND a math assignment.  The math will be the homework pages in the math workbook that correlate with the daily lesson OR a Think Central assignment.  Your child should have the pages written down in their notebooks. Mr. Utter will also post daily assignments with how to videos on the G-Force blog.

Snack:
Fourth grade students have a very early lunch this year, so we will not have a snack time.  Our time is limited in the afternoon due to recess and specials. Please make sure your child eats a sufficient amount of lunch to get them through the school day.
